Thoughts on the functions of an independent record label...

It is imperative not to consciously over-determine a notion of localisation in the present social context. Such attempts, along with further idealistic assumptions regarding communitarianism, signify exclusivity, exclusion in the social and above all, rampant conservatism, especially in relation to improvisation musics and experimental sound. As artists and consumers, we have a responsibility to discourage such pseudo-intellectual idiocy.

Conversely, one should not become reliant upon the globalized socio-cultural realm and its seemingly relentless dedication to accessibility, (as well as its transcendence of national boundaries, thus attempt to homogenize identity furthermore). Just because a recording of sound exists, it doesn't always require label support of any kind, especially when late capitalist relations of production are entrenched more so than ever.

Then what is to be done?

Surely the task of any experimental label is a revolutionary, hedonistic and self-sufficient one? In times of vast and vacuous economic and socio-cultural homogeneity, we as artists and indeed as distributors of intellectual property, have a responsibility to effectively distribute commodities that challenge such monotonous materiality - in the most suitable and efficient manner deemed possible, whilst conversely understanding the limitations of such finite commodities within a centre-right hegemonic structure. Thus, both futility and an attempt to re-articulate sound in particular and the socio-cultural realm in general can at least be consciously reprimanded.

Yet such an action should not be carried out in such a static and subjective manner! Fetishized commodities such as these should be scrutinized/dissected in an objective manner, albeit in relation to late capitalist relations of production and ultimately in connection to the stagnant socio-cultural realm - the mediocrity of which infects society on an unprecedented scale.

I put it to you that as artists and distributors, we have a responsibility to challenge, ridicule, penetrate, re-signify, manipulate, abuse, infiltrate and re-articulate the tragic conditions in which we exist today. Whilst the inherent and obvious evils of late capitalism are as potent and as intoxicating as ever, it is up to us to bring heterogeneity and hope to a needy society, rather than cowardly retreating into some sort of fictionalised communo-conservative state.

Beartown Records is not just another distributor that aims to exploit the obvious benefits of the internet and rampant globalization. The decentralisation of information has led to new and increasingly relevant issues within experimental sound and the social - many of these include age, gender, race, nationality and class and their potentiality as a catalyst for a means of resistance. Noise/Sound as a tool of expression is far from dead - by its very (un)defined form it would be impossible to assume so; and the rather baffling opinions of supposedly respected opinions of writes/distributors such as David Keenan do nothing but conserve and marginalise sound for a privileged and lucky few. Hypnagogic pop (a term invented by the delusional, self-important Keenan) for example, over-romanticises and apocalyptical, greed-ridden era, that was primarily defined by rampant, capital-driven, individuality and tacky socio-cultural homogeneity. Why (as listeners) are we retreating to such predictably conservative outlets of sound? Such interpellation signifies a subconscious submission to the status quo:

"As artists/distributors/possessors of intellectual property we can no longer challenge the cultural stagnation of the 20th/21st centuries, so let us vaguely retreat to an era where such vulgarity was as equally nauseating. Though because we are doing this via self-aware means, it's perfectly fine and meaningless!"

Such a notion personifies the negative consequences of the delineation of, and increased accessibility to sound/information - the pathetically self-aware and ironic shortcomings of pseudo-modernity! Many journalists, artists, distributors and others operating within the cultural realm today are doing absolutely nothing other than prolonging the agony of pseudo-modern stagnation by abandoning noise and subconsciously embarking upon a project of over-determination in regards to a few reasonable (at best) artists/performers.

As artists/distributors, we simply should not be tolerating such spineless, conservative actions in a culturally hopeless and economically stagnant social realm.

This is not an homongenous neo-Marxist attempt at seizing experimental output - I'm just concerned at the increasing irrelevance of experimental sound in 21st century society. We can do better than this.
